Operation Beautiful

I recently found this website--> http://operationbeautiful.com/. Forgotten where I first saw it, might have been on someone else's blog. So anyway, I was so cynical about it that I did not even bother to check out its content till today and for that I must say I'm very sorry.

Caitlin, its founder, started Operation Beautiful on her blog in June of this year because she hates 'fat talk'. She, and all other participants in this movement (because it is a movement), post unsigned notes basically saying 'You're Beautiful' in public areas for women to find. It started with her wanting women to know that beauty comes from the inside. From what I can see on the site, women from all over the world have been inspired and encouraged by her message.

I suppose I was wary about this because it reminded me too much of those shows where overweight women jabber on about being beautiful despite their weight and crying because they feel like society looks down on them and makes fun of them. I say 'Well of course it does!' I don't want to raise my kids to think it's alright to be overweight..because it's not! I'm not saying you can't be beautiful if you're overweight but what about health? And don't even get me started on pot-bellies being a sign of prosperity for men in many African countries! With the exception of those who are overweight due to medical conditions, no one has an excuse for it. Yes, remind yourself that you're beautiful, but for Heaven's sake jump on a treadmill, cut out carbs...do something! Health is more important than beauty. In fact, the healthier you are, the better you'll look.

So apologies to Caitlin for judging her mission before looking into it properly. Seems like this stuff really works for a lot of women. One woman's reaction is this though:

Please don’t go leaving notes like that on stranger’s cars or other personal property. Some of us have some pretty serious issues with being survivors of stranger rape/stalking/etc or just plain (not unreasonable) phobias of men stalking us.

I get that it’s a sweet thing to do, but I know if I found a note like that on my car I would not be able to sleep that night without all the lights on and my bedroom door locked.

Okayyyy. So this person obviously has some issues though many other women agree with her. If I found such a note somewhere, I know I'd smile, but I don't know how long I'd remember it. What would you do? Smile? Feel emotionally energised? Feel beautiful? You'd probably react to it the same way you would if someone you knew gave you a compliment. Anyone tried it? For yourself and leaving these notes around for others? At the risk of growing a head too big to fit in my doorway, I'll try it. Maybe you should too. Go to the website and check it out for yourself.
